The idea for FEERS emerged from observations made by Lesego Montsho during her years as a student at the University of Botswana between 2019 and 2023. Across student residences, lecture rooms, study spaces, computer laboratories, offices and other buildings, she repeatedly observed lights, air-conditioning systems and other equipment operating long after spaces had been vacated. What appeared to be small instances of unnecessary consumption raised a larger question of “how much energy was being wasted simply because people could not clearly see when, where and how it was being used?”
